Franz Federschmidt was the smaller but older brother of Erich Federschmidt , with whom he competed for the Pennsylvania Barge Club . Both began rowing in 1916, but had to interrupt their athletic careers because of the conscription into the US armed forces and the participation in the First World War . They only started rowing again in 1920 and qualified with their clubmates Kenneth Myers and Carl Klose for the 1920 Summer Olympics in Antwerp . There the helmsman Sherman Clark joined them. In the four with helmsman, they were only defeated by the Swiss team and won the silver medal. After the games, the brothers moved to the Undine Barge Club .
