Franz Jakob Hermann

Franz Jakob Hermann (also Frantz Jacob ; born April 23, 1717 in Solothurn ; † December 18, 1786 ibid) was a Swiss Roman Catholic clergyman , librarian and local researcher .

Life

Hermann was the son of a carpenter who immigrated from Alsace . He was trained at the Jesuit college in Solothurn. In 1740 he was ordained a priest . He was first chaplain , then in 1761 cantor at St. Ursenstift . In 1750 he initiated the founding of a theater company made up of patricians and citizens, with which he performed various plays. Including the drama he wrote in June 1755. He was also one of the founders of the Economic Society of Solothurn in 1761 , of which he was subsequently secretary . From 1762 he was a member of the Helvetic Society and from 1767 part of its governing committee. He also made the first attempts to collect statistics for the canton of Solothurn . However, these failed.

Hermann's great merit was also the founding of the Solothurn City Library in 1763 . To this end, he donated his own library as a basis and collected various writings from the city. He also tried to get more book donations and built up a coin and medal collection. He worked there as a librarian until his death.

Hermann was an honorary member of the Physical Society of Zurich , the Antiquarian Society of Kassel and the Academy of Metz . In addition, he is said to have received some form of recognition from St. Petersburg .
