Franz Josef In the Smitten
Franz Josef In der Smitten (born February 24, 1929 in Erkelenz ; † June 15, 2010 ) was a German television technician with a doctorate and professor of communications engineering . Under his leadership, color television was further developed and put into operation in West Germany.
Life
Franz Josef In der Smitten studied physics at the University of Cologne and from 1953 worked in the low-frequency technology department of the WDR . In 1958 he worked as a production engineer and head of the video measurement technology department at WDR. In 1961 he received his doctorate as Dr. rer. nat. at the University of Cologne.
In 1967 In der Smitten was head of WDR video technology and was thus responsible for the introduction of the PAL color television system for German television, to the development of which he contributed significant information technology fundamentals. After his activity, he worked from 1972 as chief engineer and deputy technical director of the WDR, before he qualified as a professor at the Faculty of Electrical Engineering at RWTH Aachen University in 1974 .
In 1975 In der Smitten was appointed full professor for communications engineering at the Bergische Universität Wuppertal . There he was dean of the electrical engineering faculty and liaison professor of the German Research Foundation (DFG) for eight years . His former WDR test laboratory for electronic color television technology is still in function in the faculty rooms and can be visited. Between 1987 and 1991 he was Vice Rector for Research and Young Scientists at the University of Wuppertal, where he retired in 1994 .
In the course of his research, In der Smitten and his students continued to be involved in the development of teletext , digital audio studio technology and digital terrestrial television DVB-T . For his research he was awarded an honorary doctorate, the Richard Theile Medal (1992) and the Federal Cross of Merit on Ribbon (2000). For many years he was chairman of the Television and Cinema Technology Society (FKTG).
Franz Josef In der Smitten died at the age of 81 after a long illness and was buried in the Melaten cemetery in his hometown of Cologne .
