Franz Julen (born September 6, 1958 in Zermatt ) is a Swiss manager . From 2000 to 2016 he was CEO of the sports retail group Intersport .

Life

Franz Julen graduated from the Swiss Hotel Management School in Lucerne in 1982. At the same time he was the race supervisor and manager of his brother, the ski racer Max Julen, between 1979 and 1984 . He led this to the giant slalom gold medal at the Winter Olympics in Sarajevo in 1984 .

From 1985 to 1987 Franz Julen worked as a sports journalist for the specialist newspaper Sport and for Swiss radio DRS . In this position he wrote, among other things, the book Pirmin - Mensch und Champion , a biography about the Swiss ski racer Pirmin Zurbriggen . In 1987, Julen moved to Marc Biver Development, a sports marketing agency that marketed athletes and sporting events around the world and later became IMG Switzerland , as deputy manager . There he looked after the Swiss ski racer Vreni Schneider and the Austrian Petra Kronberger , both of whom were multiple Olympic champions.

In 1993 Franz Julen became CEO of the sporting goods manufacturer Völkl (International) AG . He worked in this position for five years before moving to IIC - Intersport International Corporation GmbH (IIC) in 1998 . For the first two years he was Chief Operating Officer (COO). In 2000 Franz Julen was promoted to CEO of IIC. Under his leadership, the purchasing association has developed into the world's leading sporting goods retail organization. Retail sales more than doubled during his 17-year tenure from 5 billion euros to 11.5 billion euros (2016), and the country presence has quadrupled from 16 to 65 with 6,000 affiliated stores, which means that the group can now be found on all continents is. In November 2015, Franz Julen announced that he would be leaving the IIC at the end of 2016.

Today, Franz Julen holds various board memberships. He is Chairman of the Board of Directors of Valora Holding AG and Zermatt Bergbahnen AG as well as a member of the Advisory Board of the Aldi Süd Group , the Board of Directors of VFS Global and the Board of Trustees of the Kuoni and Hugentobler Foundation.
