Franz Karl Hutter (born June 8, 1865 in Kempten ; † 1924 ) was a German officer and Africa explorer . He became known through traveling in the hinterland of the German colony of Cameroon .

Life

Hutter was born in Kempten in 1865. In the German Empire he got one to the rank artillery - captain on.

In 1891 Hutter was a participant in the north-hinterland expedition to Cameroon commissioned by the Federal Foreign Office . The expedition was led by Eugen Zintgraff . Hutter became station manager in Baliburg and distinguished himself through in-depth research into the areas below. Hutter's activity was also part of the consolidation of colonial rule by training and commanding local soldiers with German weapons. In 1893, the Baliburg station was given up and Hutter left the colonial service.

In 1904 and 1905 Hutter made a trip between Wuri and Dibamba , on which he made topographical recordings. This was followed by a trip to the north-western highlands of Cameroon, which took him to Ngaundere . Hutter explored this region with regard to its natural resources and “labor conditions”.

Hutter died in 1924.

Quotes

Despite his support for German colonial rule, Hutter found words of appreciation for the traditional cultures and peoples of Cameroon:

“What modest means have all these men, the ideals of true explorers, worked, and what have they achieved? Nowadays armed and organized expeditions roam the country [Cameroon], machine guns knock down the natives and incendiary grenades fly into their villages - Nachtigal did not fire a cartridge during his four-year stay. "
“The Bali soldiers are as busy as German recruits. [...] If you as a soldier think of the bodies of our recruits at home, when you see them as God created them, then you can safely describe the Sudanese as the more beautiful and better-built race.
