Franz Kockel (born April 23, 1934 in Leipzig ; † March 20, 2015 ) was a German geologist who was an expert in the geotectonic structure of northern Germany .

Kockel, the son of geology professor Carl Walter Kockel (1898–1966), studied in Marburg, Freiburg im Breisgau, London and Bonn and received his doctorate in geology from the University of Bonn under Roland Brinkmann in 1960 ( The geology of the area between Rio Guadalhorce and the plateau from Ronda (southern Spain) ). He was then until his retirement in 1999 at the Federal Institute for Geosciences and Natural Resources (BGR) in Hanover , most recently as Geology Director. Afterwards he also advised the BGR and the Geophysical Institute in Karlsruhe.

In addition to northern Germany (where he also examined the tectonics with regard to petroleum geology) he also worked on Africa (Uganda, Ethiopia), Spain and northern Greece.

In 2005 he received the Serge von Bubnoff Medal of the German Geological Society and in 1994 the Hans Stille Medal . He also received the Van Waterschoot van der Gracht Medal (2000), a medal from Adam Mickiewicz University and an honorary member of the Polish Geological Society.
