Franz Kornemann (born February 24, 1896 in Brilon ; † February 25, 1969 ) was a German painter and glass painter.

Life

After graduating from school, he completed an apprenticeship as a decorative painter in Münster .

From 1915 to 1918 he took part in the First World War and was seriously wounded first in Romania and then in the Battle of Verdun . After a thigh amputation, he came back to his parents' house in Brilon.

From 1919 he attended the arts and crafts school in Dortmund for two and a half years . Then he worked for Professor Jöker, one of his teachers in Dortmund.

From October 1923 he studied for three semesters at the Kassel Art Academy and then for four years at the Düsseldorf Art Academy . There he was a student of the important glass painter Jan Thorn Prikker . From the master class of Professor Heinrich Campendonk , he went into self-employment as a freelance artist.

At the Art Academy in Düsseldorf he met his future wife Margarete Liebau, with whom he designed six windows for the Nikolaikirche in Eisleben.

They married in 1938, lived and worked in Düsseldorf. Their apartment and studio were bombed out in 1942, and the family initially stayed at Franz Kornemann's parents' house in Brilon.

From 1949 to 1952 he built a house with a studio in Brilon, where he designed glass windows for churches, sgraffiti and mosaics. Among other things, he made the colorful representation of mother and child in the Hohenheimberg specialist clinic in Brilon Wald or a window in the Maria Hagen chapel in Bontkirchen. During this time, many watercolors and oil paintings were created that show themes from the artist's homeland in the Sauerland.
