from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Franz Maier-Bruck (born August 26, 1927 as Franz Maier in the village of Bruck, which belongs to St. Lambrechte ; † May 7, 1982 in Vienna ) was an Austrian writer, gastrosoph and lexicographer . He gained fame above all as the author of standard works on Austrian cuisine , the history and development of which he researched over many years.

Surname

Franz Maier, who was born in the town of Bruck, which belongs to St. Lambrechte (today Lambrechte ), added the name of his place of birth to his family name as a second component of the name, apparently in order to be better recognizable as an author with a widely used name. After the Österreich-Lexikon (1966/67), Das Große Sacher Kochbuch (1975) and other publications had already appeared under the name of Franz Maier-Bruck, he officially changed his family name from Maier to Maier-Bruck in 1979. The present decision of the Viennese provincial government became legally binding on May 15, 1979.

Life

Franz Maier was born on August 26, 1927 as the son of master blacksmith and farmer Josef Maier and his wife Juliana (née Wimmersberger) in the village of Bruck in Upper Austria , which belongs to St. Lambrechte . He attended high school in Passau and Linz . After military service in 1944 and 1945 as well as after being captured by the English and American prisoners of war, he graduated in 1950. This was followed by university studies in Vienna in the fields of German studies, theater studies, art history, history and folklore. In February 1957 he received his doctorate in philosophy. After completing his studies, he initially worked as a freelancer for Austrian Broadcasting . He then worked as a freelance writer. His activities included lexicographical work and the translation of Portuguese poetry.

After he had published the two-volume “Österreich-Lexikon” together with Richard Bamberger in the Austrian Federal Publishing House for Education, Science and Art in 1967 , other publishers also noticed him. From 1968 he worked as a lecturer for the Donauland book club and shortly afterwards for the Kremayr & Scheriau publishing house . He also worked on German lexica. As a lecturer he was in charge of “Das Donauland Lexikon”, “Das Moderne Lexikon” from Bertelmann Verlag and 1973/74 “Das Jugendlexikon”. Subsequently, he advanced to become the author of important standard works on Austrian cuisine.

Franz Maier-Bruck died on May 7, 1982 at the age of 55 in Vienna in the Kaiser-Franz-Josef-Spital of a heart attack. He wasn't married. Most recently he lived at Seuttergasse 24 in Vienna-Hietzing . His final resting place is in the cemetery of the municipality of Lambrechte. He bequeathed his private library to the municipality of Lambrechte, which is in the archive of the municipal office.

Cookbook literature

In the mid-1970s, Franz Maier-Bruck and Ernst Richter completely revised and supplemented the cookbook “Die gute Wiener Küche” by Albert Kofranek, a classic of the younger cookbook literature on Viennese cuisine . Franz Maier-Bruck wrote the illustrated essay Anna Dorn in the appendix to the work Newest Universal- or: Großes Wiener Kochbuch by Anna Dorn from 1827, a standard work of the older Viennese cookbook literature, published by Verlag Kremayr und Scheriau in 1975 and their time, kitchen German .

Franz Maier-Bruck made a name for himself above all as the author of works on Austrian cuisine and the publication of other cookbooks. When “Das Große Sacher Kochbuch” appeared in the autumn of 1975, it was immediately well received in the media. Franz Maier-Bruck had worked on it for five years.

The standard works on Austrian cuisine are “Das Große Sacher Kochbuch” and the work “Vom Essen auf dem Lande”. In the “Big Sacher Cookbook”, Maier-Bruck goes into more depth on the history of Austrian cuisine. In the work "Vom Essen auf dem Lande" (Vom Essen auf dem Lande) he reports on everyday life, customs and festivals of rural life and offers - in addition to the recipes in the book - a cultural history of eating and drinking in the Austrian federal states. After his death, other cookbooks with various titles appeared under his name.
