Franz Mayr (born January 27, 1779 at Melmayerhof in Leoben -Judendorf; † April 6, 1847 in Graz ) was an Austrian industrialist.

His father Lorenz Mayr owned a farm in Schönberg near Knittelfeld, which today belongs to Spielberg (Styria) . From there he moved to Leoben .

From 1805 to 1841, Franz Mayr was the innkeeper at the Gasthof Zum schwarzen Adler , located on the main square in Leoben . In addition, he acquired and operated several hammer mills in the area of Bruck an der Mur and an old copper hammer in the Leoben suburb of Waasen, which he converted into an iron hammer. Indirectly, he became the founder of the Donawitz iron and steel works by founding the “Franzenshütte” on the Vordernbergerbach , the first steel and puddling works in Styria in 1837 . The Donawitz ironworks was built in the vicinity of the Franzenshütte in the following decades. Donawitz thus replaced Vordernberg as the center of the Styrian iron industry, whose wheel masters had until then had the sole claim to the production of pig iron from the ore of the Styrian ore mountain south of the ore region.

His son Franz (1810–1889) continued to run the industrial operations. In 1859 he was raised to the nobility and in 1872 to the rank of baron as “ Mayr von Melnhof ”.
