Franz Raffelsperger (also: Raffelsberger , Hungarian: Ferenc Raffelsperger ; baptized September 22, 1793 in Modern (today Modra ); † July 14, 1861 in Vienna ) was a geographer , cartographer and civil servant.

life and work

He grew up in poor circumstances as the son of a landowner and timber merchant, attended high school with St. Anna in Vienna from 1804 to 1805 and then the Real Academy. In the years 1820-1849 he was a civil servant in the postal service and tried to implement improvements in the travel mail system of the monarchy.

From around 1835 Franz Raffelsperger dealt with typographic map printing ( typometry ). In the early years he worked with Elisabeth Pichler (1783–1865) and her printer, Anton Pichler Sel. Widow . From 1836 to 1837 he created a general post and railroad map of the Austrian Empire , which was awarded a gold medal at the Vienna Trade Exhibition in 1839. His geographical / cartographic work is seen as a prerequisite for the revitalization and modernization of the public transport system . There are various statements about its importance in typometry: "In the field of typographic map printing, he can at best be seen as a post-inventor." (Austrian Biographical Lexicon) - "Typometry: [...] The first attempts [...] were later [...] especially perfected by Raffelsberger in Vienna. "( Meyers Konversations-Lexikon )

In 1843 he founded the kk extraordinarily exclusively privileged art institute in which u. a. the self-edited newspaper "Der Unpartheiische" produced.
