During the First World War , Rekowski fell into French captivity. After his return he worked until 1926 for the farmer Eilendorf in Sohlen, a village south of Magdeburg . He lost his job when it became known that he was employed as a cashier in the agricultural workers' association . This was followed by a job at the Magdeburg chemical plant Fahlberg-List . He is also said to have lost this position in 1928 because of political activities, although not party to any party. He then found a job at the Buckau waterworks until he became unemployed in 1930 during the global economic crisis. In 1935 he found work in the planing shop of the Buckau R. Wolf machine factory in Magdeburg. At least at the end of the 1930s he lived at Faberstrasse 11 in the Magdeburg district of Fermersleben .

Rekowski campaigned against the National Socialist tyranny and joined the Schumann resistance group. He was particularly committed to the Soviet and French prisoners of war, for whom he procured food. In addition, he disseminated information at the plant that he had received while illegally listening to foreign stations. He had a special relationship of trust with the French André Minet.

Rekowski was arrested for giving tomatoes to prisoners of war. On January 28, 1944, he was sentenced to five years in prison and five years of loss of honor . He died on March 30, 1945 while imprisoned in Coswig prison .
