The memorial for the Magdeburg resistance fighters is a memorial in Magdeburg to commemorate those who died here during the resistance against National Socialism .

layout

The memorial is located in Steubenpark on the southern edge of Magdeburg's old town in the triangle of the streets Steubenallee, Harnackstraße and Schellingstraße and is supposed to commemorate 62 murdered people.

It was created by the Magdeburg sculptor Eberhard Roßdeutscher and unveiled on May 8, 1965. The Soviet military commander of Magdeburg, Major General Gussew, and the mayor of the town of Hagendingen in Lorraine , with whom there was a partnership, took part in the unveiling . In another publication, the year 1969 is given, probably incorrectly.

The work on the memorial took a total of four years. After completing certain work phases, Roßdeutscher held exhibitions and thus involved the public in the process.

It consists of a 10 by 5 meter, 0.6 meter thick rectangular concrete wall. The wall was made of loose concrete by the Chemistry Construction Combine, Industrial Building Magdeburg division . There are three triangular cutouts on the left side of the wall. They symbolize the association of those persecuted by the Nazi regime (VVN). On the right side there is a rectangular bronze relief, on which scenes of the Magdeburg resistance are shown. Listening to foreign broadcasters, printing leaflets, sticking posters, arrests and mistreatment by the SS are shown there. On the left in front of the concrete wall is a square floor slab into which the names of 54 of those who died resisting are incorporated, mostly in alphabetical order.

The design of the open space around the memorial was carried out by VEB Garden and Landscape Design Magdeburg. Here, the area in the area of the concrete wall was somewhat removed and filled on the west side. The height of the path leading from the south side to the memorial has been adjusted to the surface of the memorial. In addition, some of the old trees were removed. The area of the memorial should be designed more clearly.

Bronze relief

The rectangular bronze relief on the right side of the memorial shows nine different scenes of Magdeburg's resistance to National Socialism .

In the upper left corner of the relief there is a scene with five people who are ready to resist National Socialism and express this through their posture. It is unclear whether this resistance should take place openly or in secret.

The picture on the right shows the arrest of two resistance fighters. There is a grieving woman next to the arrested people who are getting into a car to be removed.

The second row from the top shows three people illegally listening to foreign broadcasters for truthful information about the war. The person on the left listens to the radio, the man seated in the middle takes notes and the person on the right looks out of a window to keep an eye out for informers.

The picture on the right shows the violent arrest of four resistance fighters by an SA guard with his watchdog. A person in the left part of the figure who was previously abused sits weak and exhausted on the floor.

The left picture in the middle shows the surveillance of concentration camp prisoners by the SS . The prisoners are weak, severely malnourished and close to death. It shows the causes of the resistance of men and women to the regime.

The right picture in the middle shows the production of dissident leaflets by two male and one female resistance fighters. The leaflets are produced by a copy press standing on the table .

In the picture below on the left you can see three resistance fighters who steal various items from their workplaces to help disadvantaged and persecuted people.

In the picture below on the right, three resistance fighters are shown hanging leaflets on a beam. One person looks for observers, the female person attaches the leaflets and a third person hands over the leaflets from his bicycle basket.

In the bottom picture, concentration camp prisoners are freed by a soldier of the Soviet army and thank the Magdeburg resistance fighters with a handshake.

All the scenes depicted are based on various forms of resistance by Magdeburg citizens who lost their lives for it and are immortalized in the base plate of the memorial.
