Franz Roser

Franz Roser (born February 17, 1882 in Pforzheim , † February 8, 1945 in Mosbach ) was a German Catholic clergyman. From 1915 until his death he was the parish priest in Mosbach.

Life

He was the son of the servant Johann Roser and his wife Christine geb. Ranger. After the early death of both parents, Roser grew up with an aunt. After his time as vicariate in Durmersheim and Mannheim , he came to Mosbach as parish administrator in 1912 , where he worked as the city pastor from 1915 until his death. During the First World War he was one of the pioneers of the Caritas movement within the diocese, was appointed refugee commissioner for the Mosbach district and was awarded the Prussian and Baden War Merit Cross. The building of the church of St. Cäcilia , consecrated in 1935 and designed by Hans Herkommer at his request, is considered to be Roser's greatest merit as pastor .

During the Weimar Republic Roser was also politically active and was involved as a speaker and author of pamphlets for the Center Party , whose political Catholicism he fully represented. He had close friendships with Prelate Josef Schofer and with Chancellor Joseph Wirth . Roser also wrote several writings with theological content and also wrote numerous articles for the Mosbacher Volksblatt , which was banned at the beginning of the National Socialist rule. Due to his Christian and political convictions, Roser was in opposition to the National Socialists, but until his death shortly before the end of the war he often proved to be an indomitable personality.

Franz-Roser-Platz in Mosbach is named after him today.
