Franz Schmid (mountaineer)
Franz Xaver Schmid (born January 17, 1905 in Garmisch ; † September 18, 1992 in Neuhaus ) was a German mountaineer .
Together with Hans Ertl , he was the first to climb the north face of the Ortler on June 22, 1931 in 17 hours . A little later he and his brother Toni Schmid (1909–1932) managed to climb the Matterhorn north face from July 31, 1931 to August 1, 1931 . For this, he and his brother were awarded the Prix olympique d'alpinisme by the IOC in 1932 .
