Franz Schraml (born August 14, 1874 in Wallern , † April 2, 1946 in Graz ) was an Austrian mining scientist.

Life

Franz Schraml studied metallurgy and mining at the Bergakademie Leoben from 1894 to 1898 . During his studies he joined the Erz Corps . After completing his studies, he was employed as a saltworks engineer at the saltworks in Hall in Tirol and Ebensee . In 1900 he went to the chair for iron, metal and brewing metallurgy at the Bergakademie Příbram as an assistant, where he completed his habilitation in 1906 on the processing of metals.

In 1907 he was appointed as an associate professor and in 1911 as a full professor for general and brewery studies at the Montanistische Hochschule Leoben. From 1920 his chair was called furnace, metallurgy and salt works . The focus of his research and teaching was combustion technology. Through his investigations into the conditions of heat transfer, the efficiency of industrial furnaces could be increased significantly. Franz Schraml was a pioneer in scientific combustion technology and modern, engineering-based industrial furnace construction.

Franz Schraml was rector of the Montanistische Hochschule Leoben in the academic years 1920/21, 1921/22 and 1929/30. On his initiative, the Society of Friends of the Montanistische Hochschule Leoben was founded in 1922 .

Award

On the occasion of his 70th birthday, Franz Schraml was awarded the Goethe Medal for Art and Science in 1944 .
