Franz Šebek (born April 30, 1901 in Schluesselburg near Blatna ; † January 7, 1943 in Vienna ) was an Austrian politician ( KPÖ ) and resistance fighter against National Socialism .

Life

Sebek grew up in Vienna-Favoriten and joined the construction workers' union and SDAPÖ in his youth in 1915 . From the SDAPÖ he switched to the KPÖ in 1920, for which he ran in the National Council elections in 1930. At the time of Austrofascism , Šebek was involved in the illegal free construction workers' union and was an elected member of the Central Committee of the KPÖ. After the " Anschluss of Austria ", he worked as an unskilled worker at Siemens-Schuckert in a resistance group that campaigned for wage increases, sold illegal literature and was committed to the Austrian Red Aid .

At the end of January 1941, Šebek was arrested and indicted together with Erwin Puschmann , Margarete Schütte-Lihotzky and others before the People's Court , which met briefly in Vienna, and sentenced to death in September 1942 for “ high treason ”.

"The convicted Franz Šebek [...] is not worthy of a grace. Circumstances to be considered that would speak in favor of an alleviation of the death penalty have not become known. There are concerns about the release of the corpse. "

- From the express letter from the Gestapa Berlin to the senior Reich attorney at the People's Court of October 24, 1942

On January 7, 1943, Šebek was beheaded in the Vienna Regional Court.

Šebek is also listed on the memorial plaque for the twelve central committee members of the KPÖ who were murdered by the National Socialists, which is now in the house of KPÖ Vienna 10 (Wieland School). In Vienna- Floridsdorf (21st district), Franz-Sebek-Strasse was named after him in 2009, and there is also Franz Sebek Strasse in Steyr .
