Franz Tacke (born June 5, 1927 ; † April 6, 2011 in Rheine ) was a German engineer and entrepreneur . He was one of the pioneers in the use of wind energy in Germany.

Life

In 1960, Tacke took over the management of the machine factory F. Tacke KG in Rheine, which his grandfather had founded in 1886, as a personally liable partner. Before that, he had already taken over the management of the subsidiary KTR Systems GmbH founded in 1959 as managing partner .

Since the mid-1980s he devoted himself to wind energy and became one of the pioneers of wind energy technology in Germany. In 1985 and 1986, Tacke built wind turbines with an output of 150 kW in California , which at the time were progressive in the use of wind power. Together with his sons, he founded Tacke Windtechnik GmbH in 1990 , which quickly advanced to number two on the German market, but had to file for bankruptcy in 1997 and was taken over by the US energy company Enron . The company has been part of the American industrial group General Electric since 2002 .

In addition to his entrepreneurial activity, Tacke volunteered for the wind power industry. From 1971 to 1993 he was a board member of the Drive Technology Association in the Association of German Mechanical and Plant Engineering (VDMA), from 1976 to 1978 he was Deputy Chairman of the Board and from 1979 to 1981 Chairman of the Board of the Association. From 1970 to 1987 he also played a key role on the board of the Research Association for Drive Technology and from 1979 to 1981 on the main board of the VDMA for the interests of his industry. In 1993 he set up the wind power plant interest group in the VDMA, thereby creating a platform for wind power within the traditional industrial lobbies. Tacke chaired this group from its founding until 1998. In this capacity he was also a member of the board of the Kraftmaschinen Association. In addition, Tacke had been a member of the board of the Münsterland Metal Industry Association from 1961, of which he was chairman from 1974 to 1987.

In 1999, the VDMA awarded him the great VDMA Medal of Merit in recognition of his services.
