Franz Tank (born March 6, 1890 in Hottingen , † April 22, 1981 in Zurich ) was a Swiss physicist .

Life

Tank studied physics and mathematics at the ETH Zurich from 1908 to 1912 and received his doctorate from the University of Zurich in 1915 and qualified as a professor in 1918. From 1922 to 1960 he was a full professor for physics and mathematics at the ETH Zurich, from 1934 also for high frequency technology . From 1943 to 1947 he was the ETH Zurich as rector before.

Tank conducted research in the field of radio technology . A collaboration with Brown, Boveri & Cie. (BBC, now ABB ), where the physicist Fritz Lüdi researched in the field of high-frequency electron tubes and invented new magnetrons as transmitter tubes. Rudolf Schüpbach received his doctorate in the field of directional beams at Tank and used his knowledge at the BBC to develop the first Swiss radio link. Schüpbach later became director of the newly created BBC electronics division.

From 1952 to 1956 he was President of the Swiss Electrotechnical Association . In 1953 he was awarded an honorary doctorate from the ETH Lausanne .
