Life

Franz Doflein studied natural sciences in Munich and Strasbourg from 1893 to 1898, where he was strongly influenced by Ludwig Döderlein . During his studies he became a member of the AGV Munich in the special houses association . From 1901 he was employed at the Royal Bavarian Zoological State Collection in Munich , which he headed from 1902 under Richard Hertwig's director. In 1906 he was elected a member of the Leopoldina . In 1912 he succeeded August Weismann at the Department of Zoology at the University of Freiburg im Breisgau and finally in 1918 succeeded Willy Kükenthal in Breslau . His assistant Otto Koehler became one of the founders of ethology in Germany. Doflein undertook several extensive research trips (Central America, USA: 1898; China, Japan, Ceylon: 1904–1905; Macedonia: 1917–1918). Among other things, the result of his collecting activities in Japan (1904), from where he brought abundant marine animal material back to Munich , especially from Sagami Bay , is of lasting significance .

His textbook on Protozoan Studies was the first comprehensive comprehensive textbook in the field. In the second volume of Tierbau und Tierleben (published together with Richard Hesse ) he included people in considerations about ecological relationships. His travel descriptions Ostasienfahrt (1906) or Macedonie (1921) contain not only his own watercolors, drawings and photographs, but also biologically, zoologically and historically interesting information about the country and its people.
