Franz Vehlow

Franz Vehlow (born October 24, 1895 in Kalk ; † December 1, 1936 outside Madrid ) was a German trade union official, KPD functionary and interbrigadist .

Life and struggle

Franz Vehlow was born on Vietorstrasse in Kalk and was the son of a factory worker. He trained as a lathe operator at Klöckner-Humboldt-Deutz .

First a member of the USPD and later the KPD , he became the only communist works council at KHD . Franz Vehlow was appointed by the KPD as a mandate holder for the Leipzig ADGB Congress in September 1928. After collecting signatures against the withdrawal of his mandate, he became unemployed. From March 1929 Vehlow was a member of the KPD's district leadership in the Middle Rhine district . From 1929 to 1930 he was an editor in the KönigsbergEcho des Ostens ” and worked as an organ leader of the KPD in East Prussia . He worked as a secretary for Fritz Selbmann . Trained in 1931 at the M-school of the Comintern near Moscow , Vehlow became a member of the military-political apparatus ( intelligence service of the KPD) under the code name Louis Schuster before 1933 .

After Ernst Thalmann's arrest in Berlin at the beginning of March 1933 , he led the party-internal investigation into the circumstances of this arrest on behalf of the Central Committee of the KPD . During an illegal stay in Switzerland, Vehlow was arrested on September 25, 1936 in Zurich and expelled from the country in mid-October. In Spain political commissioner of the Thalmann battalion , he fell at the side of Hans Beimler . The circumstances and timing of her death are controversial. Franz Vehlow was buried in the Fuencarral cemetery in Madrid.

In memory of Franz Vehlow, a stumbling block was laid by Gunter Demnig in front of his former home at Weimarer Straße 16 in Cologne-Höhenberg on September 11, 2018 .
