Franz Wohlmuth (born July 17, 1855 in Neckenmarkt , † June 5, 1919 in Császár , Hungary ) was a priest from today's Burgenland who was executed during the time of the Hungarian Soviet Republic .

Life

Franz Wohlmuth was born in Neckenmarkt in what was then German West Hungary (now Burgenland ) in 1855 . In 1881 he was ordained a priest in Raab ( Győr ) . Wohlmuth worked as a chaplain in Rust , Neusiedl am See and Deutschkreutz . From 1889 to 1892 he was spiritual in the boys 'seminar in Győr and taught as a religion professor at the girls' school. From 1894 to 1919 he was pastor of Császár in Komárom-Esztergom County west of Budapest .

Wohlmuth was known for his pastoral zeal and generosity. With his income from an Esterházy church foundation, he set up a charity fund to support the poor in his parish.

The proclamation of the Soviet republic on March 21, 1919 also shaped the village life of Császár. On June 3, 1919, the local farmers locked the workers' council in the town hall, which was holding a meeting there. When Wohlmuth heard of this, he visited the prisoners and ordered their release. The communist council orchestrated his arrest and demanded his death sentence or a heavy price for his release. Although Calvinist farmers in the village offered twelve oxen for Wohlmuth's release, the pastor was sentenced to death. Wohlmuth is buried in the local cemetery of Császár.

The association Freundeskreis Pfarrer Franz Wohlmuth , founded in 2012, endeavors to beatify the murdered priest. The Hungarian Bishops' Conference also supports the cause.
