Franz Zabza (born January 10, 1896 in Vienna ; † June 16, 1933 there ) was an Austrian architect .

Life

Zabza was the son of a carpenter from Bohemia. He graduated from the building school of the state trade school , which he graduated in 1915 with the Matura . After the war he studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Vienna with Friedrich Ohmann (1919–1922) and at the Technical University (1919–1921). As one of the best of his year, he received the state travel grant, the so-called Rome Prize , with which he was able to go on a study trip to Italy in 1922. After a few years of practice, he joined the Vienna City Planning Office around 1925 , where he built some residential complexes for the municipality of Vienna. Zabza died impoverished of kidney failure at the age of 37.

meaning

In view of the young age of Franz Zabza and the difficult economic situation at the time, the work of the architect remained narrow. He only built municipal housing for the city of Vienna. His buildings reveal a more traditional, decorative concept in the sense of his teacher Ohmann. The later projects also have a classic design language, even if, in keeping with the spirit of the times, the decorative character is receding.
