Franz Zelger

Franz Ludwig Eduard Josef Zelger (also: Franz Zelger) (born June 16, 1864 in Lucerne ; † January 7, 1944 ) was a Swiss lawyer and author of numerous historical essays.

Life

Zelger was a citizen of Stans and the son of the landscape painter Josef Zelger. From 1881 to 1883 he attended the higher grammar school classes at the higher education institution in Lucerne. In 1883/84 he studied philosophy at the Episcopal Lyceum Eichstätt ; here he was also a member of Helvetia Eystettensis , which he chaired in the summer semester of 1884 as president. 1884-1886 he studied in Munich and from 1886 to 1889 in Basel Jura ; In 1889 he was at the University of Basel a doctorate in law doctorate ; his dissertation topic was "The Nidwalden Alpine Cooperatives". He then worked as a lawyer in Lucerne and from 1891 to 1895 acted as secretary (head clerk) of the Department of Justice and deputy state clerk for the Canton of Lucerne . From 1895 to 1931 he was a member of the criminal court of the Canton of Lucerne and from 1918 to 1929 its president. From 1891 he was a member of the Lucerne Corporation Citizens' Council, from 1903 to 1929 its vice-president. In 1899/1900 his 5-volume work «The Lucerne Legislation» was published. From 1930 he held the presidency of the corporation goods administration and the corporation citizens' council of the city of Lucerne. At the same time he was President of the Citizens Library Commission, a member of the Swiss National Library Commission, Vice-President of the District Railway Council SBB II Basel and a member of the Railway Council III. In the Swiss army he was a lieutenant colonel in the infantry.

In addition to legal and legal history works, Zelger wrote numerous historical, in particular regional-historical articles throughout his life, which appeared in daily newspapers and magazines and also as separate prints .
