Ernst Alfred Stückelberg

Ernst Alfred Stückelberg (born August 17, 1867 in Basel ; † July 31, 1926 there ) was a Swiss historian , art historian and preservationist .

life and work

Ernst Alfred Stückelberg, son of the painter Ernst Stückelberg , studied history and art history in Basel, Berlin , Bonn and Zurich . In 1890 he was awarded a PhD at the University of Zurich with a dissertation on the Constantinian patriciate. phil. PhD . In 1893 he also completed his habilitation in Zurich. There he worked from 1894 to 1903 as a private lecturer , from 1897 with a teaching position for numismatics . From 1903 he taught at the University of Basel , first as a private lecturer, from 1905 as an associate professor for Christian antiquity.

In 1917, on his 50th birthday, Jakob August Heer created a commemorative medal for Stückelberg and a birthday font was published in Schweizer Illustrierte .

In 1919 he was appointed Basel's first public conservationist.

As a scientist, Stückelberg researched the history of the veneration of saints , Christian archeology , numismatics, heraldry , sphragistics and epigraphy as well as monument preservation.

In 1896 he was one of the founders of the Swiss Society for Folklore .
