Franz von Rothwitz
Franz von Rothwitz OFM (* / † in the 14th century) was titular bishop of Cantanus and auxiliary bishop in Breslau from 1346 to 1365 and vicar general of Bishop Preczlaw von Pogarell .
Life
Franz came from the Silesian noble family Rothwitz. It is not known when he was ordained a priest and joined the Franciscan Order. As such he was on August 21, 1346 by Pope Clement VI. appointed titular bishop of Cantani ( episcopus Canticensis ) and auxiliary bishop in Breslau. His ordination took place at the papal court in Avignon . In addition, the Breslau bishop Preczlaw von Pogarell appointed him his vicar general.
Some evidence has been obtained from his work. I.a. On August 19, 1347, he granted a 40-day indulgence to those believers who, after confession, would reverently pray in front of a gilded cross of the Duchess of Oels . On September 18, 1349, he consecrated new altars in the monastery church of the Striegau Benedictine nuns as well as the cloister and also awarded a 40-day indulgence to all who would pray there and devoutly walk through the cloister. He granted further indulgence privileges on October 19, 1353 to the Marian Brotherhood in Lüben and on October 1, 1362 to the St. Vincent's Foundation in Breslau . In 1352 he gave money to the Strehlener Poor Clares, which they needed to pass on to Duke Nikolaus from Münsterberg for his approval to build a pond. In addition, Franz von Rothwitz appears in several documents from Bishop Pogarell as a witness in the first place.
Franz von Rothwitz owned the episcopal estate Schiedlagwitz near Canth for life . On October 21, 1365 he acquired the neighboring Cape village near Schweidnitz from his brother Bernhard, which should revert to his brother or his heir when he died. It is the last document with a message from his life. Since his four nephews sold Kapsdorf to Konrad Molheim on October 18, 1374, it can be concluded that both the auxiliary bishop Franz and his brother Bernhard were no longer alive at that time.
