Franz von der Wenge

Franz Ferdinand Lambert Nicolaus Freiherr von der Wenge zu Enckingmühlen and Dieck (* 1707 ; † 1788 ) came from the Westphalian line of the von der Wenge family and was cathedral capitular of the Münster bishopric from 1736 and canon of the collegiate monastery of St. Mauritz before Münster from 1765 .

On February 25, 1741, he applied to the Archbishop of Cologne for permission to search for and dig iron rock between Osterfeld and Buer im Vest. On July 13, 1753, Clemens August , Elector and Archbishop of Cologne and Lord in Vest Recklinghausen , issued the “Concession” for the construction of an iron smelter for Franz Ferdinand von der Wenge. In 1754 the construction of the St. Antony hut began. On October 18, 1758, smelting began in the first blast furnaces in the Ruhr area. In 1771 von der Wenge leased the hut. After his death it was sold by his heirs and from 1808 belonged to Gutehoffnungshütte .

He was probably buried in the collegiate church Maria in der Not in Essen-Stoppenberg .
