The Franciscans came to Opole at the beginning of the 13th century. The existence of the monastery is documented for 1248. The brothers first built a monastery and a wooden church, which burned down in 1307. A short time later, the church was rebuilt under Boleslaw I in the Gothic style . The tower was added in the 15th century. The furnishings are largely baroque . Old wall paintings from the 14th century can still be seen.

The church also served as a castle church , as the Piast castle was in the immediate vicinity. Particularly noteworthy is the Anna Chapel , built in 1309 (also known as the Piast Chapel ). A triptych is only from 1958 , but it is based on Gothic models. The two ducal tombs are located in the chapel. The dukes Bolko I , Bolko II and Bolko III are buried there. as well as the latter's wife, Anna. Several fires destroyed the church in the course of its history. It was built up again and again. The church tower, designed in the neo-renaissance style, was built in 1899 . He is 52 meters high.

Until it was destroyed in World War II , the house "Die Goldene Eins" was located in front of the church, directly on the Mühlgraben . The remains of the house built in 1895 were removed in 1946 and used to rebuild the Franciscan monastery. The church itself was not destroyed in the war. From 1945 the Franciscans moved into the monastery again, as the church had been Protestant since the city's Reformation. In 1986 the top of the tower and its cross broke off in a strong storm. During the restoration, the wooden structure was immediately renewed. The entire helmet has been covered in copper since then. In 2007 the church was completely renovated from the outside and today it shines again in its old splendor.
