Franciscan Chapel in Forcalquier

The Franciscan monastery in Forcalquier , a French commune in the Alpes-de-Haute-Provence in the region Provence-Alpes-Cote d'Azur , built in the 13th century. The former monastery has been a protected architectural monument ( Monument historique ) since 1968 .

history

The Franciscan monastery was built around 1236 on the site of a former Benedictine priory . This was one of the first Franciscan settlements in Provence . The buildings were badly damaged during the Huguenot Wars , and the convent then went into decline. During the secularization during the French Revolution , only two monks lived in the monastery. After the buildings served as a farm for a long time, the municipality of Forcalquier bought the former monastery and had it renovated from 1963.

building

Parts of the church, a crypt , the restored Gothic cloister from the 14th century and the chapel still remain from the monastery complex, now used by the Université européenne des senteurs et des saveurs . The library hall and the scriptorium have also been preserved.
