The Franciscan monastery Schwaz is a Franciscan monastery (OFM) in Schwaz in Tyrol in Austria.

history

Church from Burggasse

The monastery was built between 1507 and 1515 at the instigation of the mine owners and the citizens of Schwaz. A small part of the monastery is much older. It is a building that belonged to Johannes Fieger and was donated to the Franciscans along with the garden . They integrated it into the new monastery building. Further additions were made in 1735 and 1925.

The monastery church, which was inaugurated on May 3, 1515, was repeatedly redesigned to reflect the trends of the times. The first work was done in 1580 and 1620. In 1735 it finally lost its formerly Gothic face (demolition of the rood screen and the vaulted ribs ). Further renovations took place in 1840 and 1965. In 1965 the main altar and 2 side altars were removed without replacement. In the 1980s and 90s the monastery and its church were extensively renovated. In 1882 part of the Eger roof field was acquired and the monastery garden was enlarged considerably. The garden is still cultivated today by a confrere and the income (fruit, vegetables, flowers) is sold directly.

Cloister

Gothic cloister

The cloister was painted with Gothic frescoes between 1519 and 1526 . In its entrance area, four more pictures were added around 1608. The baroque paintings of the Gothic paintings carried out in the late 17th and early 18th centuries were removed in 1912 and 1939. From 1980 to 1997 Wolfgang Götzinger restored the cloister frescoes. In doing so, he supplemented the irregular remains of the originally colorful secco painting with watercolor retouching.

Study house

In 1924/25 a large study house was built in the monastery garden for the theology's own studies, which was closed again in 1972. Until 1995 the study house was used by the Religious Education Academy.
