The severed head was discovered in 1859, but the associated body could not be found. The head had been severed from the torso with a blow between the third and fourth cervical vertebrae and deposited in the moor . Part of the skin under the chin was torn off with the blow. The skull, parts of the skin and the approximately 50 cm long scalp hair have been preserved from the head . The hair has a red color due to the long storage in the bog and the influence of the moor acids , the skin has a gray-brown color after the head has dried. The hair was tied in a bun on the head with a 75 cm long and about 5.3 cm wide woven hair band. Because of the hairstyle, the head is addressed as female . So far, the head has not yet been scientifically examined in more detail, so that a qualified chronological dating is not yet available. The Danish National Museum in Copenhagen , in whose care the find is, assumes a provisional dating to the Iron Age .
