The Fraunhofer Institute for Foundry, Composite and Processing Technology (IGCV), also known as Fraunhofer IGCV for short, is an institution of the Fraunhofer Society for the promotion of applied research . The facility is headquartered in Augsburg . Further locations are in Garching near Munich and in Taufkirchen in the district of Munich .

The activities are assigned to applied research in the fields of foundry, composite and processing technology. The focus is on efficient engineering, networked production and multi-material solutions.

history

The Fraunhofer IGCV has existed since 2016. The initial institution was formed from the Function-Integrated Lightweight Design FIL project group of the Fraunhofer Institute for Chemical Technology ICT, the Resource-Efficient Mechatronic Processing Machines RMV project group of the Fraunhofer Institute for Machine Tools and Forming Technology IWU and the foundry working group of the chair for Forming Technology and Foundries (utg) from the Technical University of Munich . The facility initially employed around 100 people. Sponsors are the Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft, the Technical University of Munich and the Bavarian Ministry of Economic Affairs.

Research and Development

Fraunhofer IGCV conducts research in the field of manufacturing processes and materials science, machine and process chains, and factory and company networks. This is done across disciplines.

Cooperations

The Fraunhofer IGCV is a member of the following Fraunhofer-internal groups and alliances:

  • Fraunhofer Group for Production
  • Fraunhofer Additive Manufacturing Alliance
  • Fraunhofer Lightweight Construction Alliance
  • Fraunhofer Cleaning Technology Alliance
  • Fraunhofer Simulation Alliance
  • Fraunhofer autoMOBILE production alliance

In addition, there are university collaborations with the following universities:

All three institute directors of Fraunhofer IGCV hold chairs at the Technical University of Munich.

Infrastructure

The Fraunhofer IGCV operates at a total of three locations. The head office in Augsburg is where the management, administration and the research areas composites and processing technology are located. The foundry technology science department is located in Garching near Munich. The Ludwig Bölkow Campus in Taufkirchen specializes in the scientific field of efficient fiber composite construction and manufacturing technologies for aerospace applications.

A total of 137 employees work at the three locations, 65% of whom are scientifically active. The scientific work is supported by around 160 scientific assistants.

Klaus Drechsler has been the managing director of Fraunhofer IGCV since July 2019. In addition, Gunther Reinhart and Wolfram Volk are part of the three-person management team.
