Freaky! ( English for Freaky ) is an English-language pop song written by Gianluigi Fazio, Henrik Steen and Nanna Bottos, as well as interpreted by Senhit . With the title she should represent San Marino at the Eurovision Song Contest 2020 in Rotterdam .

Background and production

Senhit Zadik Zadik already took part under the stage name Senit in the Eurovision Song Contest 2011 for San Marino , where she was eliminated in the semi-finals. In March 2020 it was announced that she would run again for San Marino under the name Senhit . At the same time it was announced that viewers could choose between two titles for the Grand Prix. The result was published two days, with the title Freaky! won with 51.6 percent against Obsessed .

The song was produced by Gianluigi Fazio. He wrote it together with Henrik Steen and Nanna Bottos. The mixing was done by Michele Zocca. It was recorded by the Budapest Art Orchestra, which was already responsible for the Grand Prix title Voda . The baton led Francesco Berta.

Music and lyrics

The title is mainly shaped by the style of the disco . The two-line intro is followed by the first verse, which is mainly only accompanied by a bass . The song is determined from the first chorus by the use of non legato -played instruments. The first bridge is identical to the intro, while the second bridge is the same as the outro.

The singer says the song was there to celebrate life. You should let go of negative emotions and do whatever you feel like doing. The title also deals with the freedom not to have to worry and not to worry about prejudices.

At the Eurovision Song Contest

San Marino should have performed with this song in the second semifinals of the Eurovision Song Contest 2020. However, due to the advancing COVID-19 pandemic , the competition was canceled.

reception

The Eurovisionary blog called Freaky! as a title that is outdated and cheesy, but still a lot of fun. ESCXtra also found similar words, but doubted that the song would have made enough impression unlike other competition entries. See the attempt to follow in the footsteps of the previous article Say Na Na Na . ESC Kompakt rated the title mostly poorly and criticized the lack of a “musical red thread”. It is an "arbitrary radio number" that has "no real charisma".

publication

The title was published as part of the Digital Battle Eurovision on March 7, 2020. The music video shot in the Cinecittà studios was released just two days later. Luca Tommassini directed and produced. The cameraman was Ferran Paredes Rubio.
