The Fred Zinnemann Square is on the 3rd Vienna district , highway . It was named in 2008 after the Austrian film director Fred Zinnemann (1907–1997).
Location and characteristics
The square is a traffic area in the area of the Aspanggrund (“Euro-Gate”) and was named before it was built. The approximately 5,000 m² large square is the heart of a multi-part open space ensemble. The square was designed by Isolde Rajek and Oliver Barosch . Seven seating islands were installed on the square and planted with hornbeams . The seating islands are placed in such a way that the space should appear spacious. The floor has an ornamental pattern and consists of blasted in-situ concrete . The integration of the S-Bahn station Wien-St. Marx and the connection to the residential complexes, which are at different levels, is via an outside staircase with ramp-like walkways. This means that a height difference of six meters can be overcome. Room-dividing fall protection and handrails are largely dispensed with. The retaining wall is clad with granite slabs. There is a digital time display on the hill. As a reminiscence of the eponymous director Fred Zinnemann and his probably greatest film, the ticker shows " High Noon " every day at 12:00 noon .
history
On the site of the former Aspang train station in Vienna-Landstrasse, the new urban development quarter Aspanggrund has been under development since 2008 . In 2017, the realization was completed at the southeast end on Landstraßer Hauptstrasse . A plaza was already planned in the urban development concept at the site of today's Fred-Zinnemann-Platz. The rajek barosch Landschaftsarchitekten office won the design competition . This square was completed in 2017.
A part of today's square at the confluence of Aspangstrasse in Rennweg was called Ziakplatz from 1990 to 2008 after the popular educator Karl Ziak (1902–1987). As compensation for the inclusion in Fred-Zinnemann-Platz, a nearby park was named Ziakpark .
