Fred Ruchhöft

Fred Ruchhöft (born February 9, 1971 in Lübz ) is a German historian and archaeologist specializing in the Slavic settlement of northern and central Germany, as well as the medieval settlement development in what is now Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania .

Life

Fred Ruchhöft attended the ten-class polytechnic high school "Rosa Luxemburg" in his hometown Plau am See , then he passed his Abitur in 1989 at the extended high school in the then district town of Lübz. After his initial basic military service in the NVA , due to the political changes of German reunification , he was able to finish doing civilian service .

In 1990 Ruchhöft began studying to be a teacher at the Humboldt University in Berlin , but shortly afterwards switched to the Historical Institute of the University of Rostock to study history, prehistory and early history as well as classical archeology there until 1995. He finished his studies with a master's thesis on “The benefices of the Plau parish. An investigation into the financial circumstances of a Mecklenburg parish from its foundation to 1960 ”. He then began his career as an archaeologist at the State Office for Heritage Management Mecklenburg-Vorpommern (now State Office for Culture and Heritage Conservation, Division. Archeology and heritage) in Schwerin.

In the same year he became a research assistant for the Germania Slavica project at the Humanities Center for the History and Culture of East Central Europe. V. (GWZO) in Leipzig. After working as a freelancer from 2006 to 2008, Ruchhöft has been a research assistant at the Chair for Prehistory and Protohistory at the University of Greifswald since June 2009 . From September 2019 he took over the management of the museum in Goldberg, which had not yet opened after a long renovation phase .

His main research interests and projects are:

  • Slavic settlement history (castles, tribal areas, settlement structures)
  • late medieval settlement development (desertification, urban development in rural areas)
  • Noble fortifications, history of the "robber barons"
  • Consequences of anthropogenic interference in the settlement landscape
  • GPS-supported research on settlement structures in the area
  • Research on the lower nobility in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania and its archaeologically tangible traces
  • Slavic archeology on Rügen
  • Exhibition “Art meets archeology” in the Peilturm on Cape Arkona (Rügen) as co-curator
  • Collaboration on the "Mecklenburg Monastery Book" (joint project of the universities of Leipzig and Rostock)

For several years, Fred Ruchhöft was excavation manager at the archaeological excavation site of Jaromarsburg at Cape Arkona on the island of Rügen.
