Fred Stobaugh (born August 22, 1917 - November 23, 2016 ) was an American pensioner who wrote the lyrics to the song Oh Sweet Lorraine in 2013 after the death of his wife Lorraine and submitted it to a competition. Shortly afterwards, video documentation of the recording sessions developed into an Internet phenomenon . The song then reached the US charts and was later able to reach chart positions in other countries.

Life

Fred Stobaugh lived in Peoria , Illinois . Before retiring, he worked as a driver for a laundry company. He and his wife Lorraine (born July 30, 1921 as Lorraine Dinquel) met in 1938 when she worked as a waitress for the fast food chain A&W . Two years later, on June 26, 1940, they married. Lorraine died on April 26, 2013, shortly before the 75th anniversary of their meeting. The couple had three daughters.

The 96-year-old Stobaugh processed the memories of his wife in the love song Oh Sweet Lorraine and submitted the text to the song competition of the music studio Green Shoe Studio . The owner of the small music studio, the music producer Jacob Colgan became aware of the text, arranged and set it to music . He played it professionally and released the song Oh Sweet Lorraine as a single.

The associated video documentation by Colgan spread viral via blogs and social networks and was viewed almost seven million times on the video platforms YouTube and Vimeo within a few weeks (as of September 24, 2013). On August 30, 2013, Stobaugh was Person of the Week on ABC News . On September 19, 2013 he was a guest on the talk show The View .

In Austria, the single reached number 1 on the iTunes charts after its release , in Germany it reached number 4 on iTunes on August 28, 2013. The song then entered the official charts in several countries. In the US, Oh Sweet Lorraine reached # 42, making Stobaugh the oldest person to get on the Billboard Hot 100 at 96 .
