Fred Thelonious Baker (born June 4, 1960 in Tibshelf , England ) is a British fusion bassist and guitarist.

Baker first learned classical and jazz guitar, but switched to bass guitar as a teenager. During his time at the Birmingham School of Music in 1980 he met the ex- soft machine musician Ric Sanders , with whom he then played in the quartet of John Etheridge . He toured Central Europe alongside Harry Beckett and recorded three albums (with Chris McGregor ). He also played with Maggie Nicols and with Elton Dean and Etheridge, and then from 1988 to 1991 in Phil Miller's In Cahootsto perform (several albums). He then continued to play in a duo with Miller, and since 2002 in Pip Pyle's band and with Alex Maguire . In 1993 he was with Horace Parlan in Germany, where "A Man of Roses" was created. He brought drummer Brian Abrahams and saxophonist Shell Baker into his own band, in which he worked as a guitarist. He also played with Ric Sanders and Vicky Clayton in folk jazz , where he was involved in the Sandy Denny tribute "It Suits Me Well". Together with the guitarist Simon Dinnigan he also recorded the "Concerto for Two Guitars" by Andrew Downes.

Baker teaches Jazz and Progressive Music at the Birmingham Conservatoire .
