Frederick Herman Tuttle (born July 18, 1919 in Tunbridge , Vermont , † October 4, 2003 , ibid) was an American dairy farmer , actor and candidate for the United States Senate for Vermont in 1998.

Life

Tuttle was born in Tunbridge, Vermont , to Bessie Laura (Hoyt) and Joseph Charles Tuttle. He lived in Tunbridge all his life except during World War II when he served in the United States Army .

Tuttle dropped out of high school to work on the family farm. In 1961 he married his wife Dorothy and gave up farming in 1984.

After his retirement he starred in several films by the Vermont native John O'Brien such as Nosey Parker and Man with a Plan . In the latter film, he plays a retired farmer who is running for the United States House of Representatives .

In 1998, Tuttle was persuaded to run in the primary as a Republican candidate for the United States Senate . His opponent was Jack McMullen , a multimillionaire who had lived in Massachusetts for most of his life . McMullen had some opponents in his own party, believing he was a carpet excavator who was only moving to Vermont to run for a seat in the Senate. Democrats and non-party voters are also allowed to vote in the Vermont primaries . Many eligible voters saw this as a way of preventing McMullen's election. Some also wanted to promote the sale of the film Man with a Plan with the campaign . Six years later, Jack McMullen became a Republican candidate for the Senate.

The election campaign that followed was remarkable in many ways. McMullen and the Republican Party challenged Tuttle's election motion and invalidated 95 supporters' signatures. After that he was missing 23 signatures; but he received an additional 2,309. McMullen then took Tuttle flowers to the hospital. He was there for knee surgery .

During the radio debates, Tuttle asked about local knowledge, not political issues. For McMullen, as a newcomer, it was not possible to answer the questions or pronounce the city names correctly. When asked “How many teats does a Holstein cattle have?” He replied “Six”. But a cow has four teats. Tuttle then won the primaries by ten percentage points. He competed against incumbent Democratic Senator Patrick Leahy .

Tuttles campaign against Senator Leahy was marked by the words of praise for his opponent. "He knows how many teats a cow has." Tuttle said he didn't want to win because he 'd have to move to Washington, DC . Despite supporting his opponent, he received 48,051 votes (22 percent of the electorate).

Tuttle has been described by Senator Leahy as "the distilled essence of Vermanthood". He was both impressive individualist as well as Joe Sixpack seen.

Tuttle died of a heart attack after digging up potatoes for several days . He was buried in his overalls with an autograph pen and a Moxie soda can.
