Freddie Starr (born January 9, 1943 in Huyton near Liverpool as Frederick Leslie Fowell ; † May 9, 2019 on the Costa del Sol , Spain ) was a British comedian who became known to the general public in the 1970s. He was also a voice impersonator and pop singer, who with the music album After the Laughter , which was awarded with a gold record in Great Britain and succeeded in the UK Top 10 in March 1974 with his single It's You .

Career

Starr began as a song and comedy act in a road show in 1954. In 1958 he played the role of a young teddy boy in Basil Dearden's film Children of the Street (Violent Playground) . In late 1958 he became a singer with Howey Casey & The Seniors (alongside Derry Wilkie ); this band was the first group from Liverpool that performed in Hamburg and was booked for a season in the Kaiserkeller . Cuts in the fee by the organizers led to the dissolution of the band. In 1962 Starr joined the Midnighters , replacing Gus Travers as lead singer and leading the group until 1964. During this time they released three records on the Decca label Who Told You ?, Baby Blue and Never Cry on Someone's Shoulder , which it didn’t make it into made the charts. With his own band he presented the album This Is Liverpool Beat in the same year .

In 1965 he switched to the Delmonts , with whom he appeared in cabaret. After pursuing a solo career for a few years, he had a hit with It's You in 1974. He then appeared on Sunday Night At The London Palladium and became a leading comedian.

Starr was well known as a television star in England; its worldwide popularity rose considerably when the tabloid The Sun, despite Starr's denials (but with the consent of his PR advisor), headlined in 1986: Freddie Starr ate my Hamster ("Freddie Starr ate my hamster ").

In 2011, he participated in the eleventh season of the British television show I'm a Celebrity… Get Me Out of Here! part.

In connection with the child abuse scandal to Jimmy Savile and Starr from October 2012 became the focus of investigators and was taken up in January 2014 a total of three times temporarily in custody. He denied all allegations.
