Freddy Herbrand

Freddy Herbrand (born June 1, 1944 in Malmedy ) is a former Belgian athlete . He was Olympic sixth in the decathlon in 1972 .

Athletic career

Freddy Herbrand took part in a test in various sports as a student. Because he jumped over four feet in this test, his instructor recommended that he try athletics. He then joined the Malmedy Athletic Club .

The 1.90 m tall Herbrand won a total of 15 Belgian championship titles: 1963, 1964 and 1965 in the triple jump , 1964, 1965, 1967 and 1970 in the high jump , 1971 and 1972 in the 110-meter hurdles and long jump as well as 1968, 1970, 1971 and 1973 in the decathlon.

Herbrand was supposed to participate in the decathlon at the 1968 Olympic Games in Mexico City , but he injured his little toe the day before and had to undergo an operation. In 1969 he started at the European Championships in Athens, but broke off the decathlon. Two years later he finished 17th at the European Championships in Helsinki with 7328 points. He had previously set a Belgian record in Brussels in June 1971 with 7998 points, which Frédéric Xhonneux only broke in 2005 . At the 1972 Olympic Games in Munich, Herbrandt finished sixth in the decathlon with 7948 points . 1973 and 1975 Herbrand took part with the Belgian team in the European Athletics Cup of all -rounders , but the Belgian team could not qualify for the final.

After his time as an active athlete, Herbrand worked as a coach in Qatar. Later he was on business in Europe for Qatar. In 1998 he returned to Qatar as a sports advisor. In 2018, the athletics track funded by the Emir of Qatar and named after Freddy Herbrand was inaugurated in Malmedy.

Honor

In 1970 Freddy Herbrand was honored with the Belgian trophy for sporting merits (“Trophée national du Mérite sportif” / “Nationale trofee voor sportverdienste”).
