Frederic Franklin (born June 13, 1914 in Liverpool , † May 4, 2013 in New York City ) was a British - American ballet dancer and theater director .

Life

Franklin grew up in Liverpool. His career as a ballet dancer began in 1931 at the Casino de Paris with Josephine Baker . After briefly dancing with Vic-Wells Ballet (predecessor of the Royal Ballet Company ) he became a member of the Markova-Dolin Ballet in 1935 . Three years later he became Leonide Massine's dance partner at the Ballets Russes de Monte Carlo , where he worked until 1952. Franklin danced with the Ballet Russe in various roles and appeared in 45 leading roles directed by ballet choreographers such as Michel Fokine , Bronislava Nijinska , Frederick Ashton , George Balanchine , Agnes de Mille , Ruth Page and Valerie Bettis . With the ballet dancer Alexandra Danilova , Franklin formed one of the legendary ballet couples of the 20th century. Other ballet partners included Alicia Markova , Irina Baronova , Agnes de Mille, Ruthanna Boris , Yvette Chauviré , Moira Shearer , Rosella Hightower , Maria Tallchief , Tamara Tournanova , Alicia Alonso and Louis Elyn .

In 1952 Franklin co-founded the Slavenska-Franklin Ballet and a few years later co-founded the Washington Ballet and later co-founded the National Ballet of Washington, DC In later years he worked as a freelancer in the United States and worked with various ballet companies, including the Cincinnati Ballet , the Dance Theater of Harlem , the Chicago Ballet , the Tulsa Ballet , the Oakland Ballet , the Pittsburgh Ballet Theater, and the American Ballet Theater .

In 2005 his life was filmed in the documentary Ballets Russes . His life partner was William Haywood Ausman for many years .
