Frederic William Madden (born April 9, 1839 in London , † June 21, 1904 in Brighton ) was a British numismatist and librarian .

Life

Frederic William Madden was the eldest of six children born to Frederic Madden and Emily Sarah. Robinson.

After attending the Merchant Taylors' School , St. Paul's School and Charterhouse School , he did not start studying, but worked as an assistant to the Antiquities Department of the British Museum from 1858 . After this was split in 1861, he worked in the Department of Coins and Medals. Over time he gained some fame as a numismatist. His career suffered an abrupt break in 1868: in 1864 Edward Wigan had donated his significant ancient coin collection to the museum, and Madden kept a few duplicates in his private apartment, which he eventually sold. Wigan viewed this as a misunderstanding, but the announcement of the transaction resulted in Madden's resignation in 1868. He then created catalogs for coin exhibitions, was employed as a secretary at Brighton College from 1874 and was the chief librarian of the Brighton City Library from 1888 to 1902. In 1896 Madden was awarded the Medal of the Royal Numismatic Society .

Frederic William Madden was married to Elizabeth Sarah Rannie; the couple had four children.

As secretary of the London Numismatic Society , Madden was editor of the Numismatic Chronicle for several years , to which he contributed numerous articles.

Madden's main work was Coins of the Jews (1881), the second volume of the International Numismata orientalia. A History of Jewish Coinage (1864), the standard work for this area of ​​numismatics until the middle of the 20th century, is a preliminary work .
