Frederick Augustus Klein

Frederick Augustus Klein (* 1827 in Strasbourg , † December 1, 1903 in England) was a missionary of the Anglican Church Mission Society (CMS) in Palestine . He is known for discovering the Mesha stele .

Klein studied at the Mission Institute in Basel and then, after being ordained as an Anglican priest, went to the service of the Church Mission Society in Islington . From 1851 he was in Palestine for them, first in Nazareth and from 1855 in Jerusalem . In 1868 he discovered the Mescha stele near Dhiban near the Dead Sea, the oldest known Semitic ( Moabilitic ) inscription from around 840 BC. In 1868 he published a message about it in the Pall Mall Gazette and again on April 19, 1870.

From 1877 he was in Germany, where he translated from Arabic (and into Arabic). From 1882 to 1893 he was a missionary for the Church Mission Society in Cairo . There he also translated the Book of Common Prayer into Arabic. In his retirement he also wrote a book on Islam.
