Frederick Marquis, 1st Earl of Woolton
Frederick James Marquis, 1st Earl of Woolton CH PC (* 23. August 1883 in Liverpool , † 14. December 1964 ) was a British politician of the Conservative Party and businessman .
biography
After graduating from Manchester Grammar School, Marquis studied mathematics at the University of Manchester . After graduating, he was a math teacher at Burnley Grammar School. While serving as the overseer of the University of Manchester settlement, he joined the David Lewis Club, which led to the attention of David Lewis, executive director of the Lewis's department store chain, who brought him into the business. In the years that followed, new department stores opened and Marquis was promoted to chairman of Lewis's in 1935.
He was promoted to a Knight Bachelor degree in 1935 and in 1939 as a peer with the title Baron Woolton , of Liverpool in the County of Lancaster , promoted to the nobility. This made the Marquis a member of the House of Lords . At the beginning of the Second World War he was first Minister of Supply in 1939, but he was appointed Minister of Food as part of a new cabinet under Prime Minister Winston Churchill in 1940 . In this role he was responsible for the rationing of food in the United Kingdom and made a significant contribution to ensuring that the population was adequately supplied until the end of the war in 1945. In 1945 he was also Lord President of the Council .
1946 Lord Woolton Chairman ( Chairman ) of the Conservative Party and was in the next six years been instrumental in the successful reorganization of the party that ultimately lead to electoral success in the general election in 1951 led. Prime Minister Winston Churchill then reappointed him as Lord President of the Council. In 1952 he left the cabinet.
In 1953 he was promoted to Viscount Wolton , of Liverpool in the County of Lancaster. In 1956 he was finally awarded the title Earl of Woolton and the subordinate title Viscount Walberton , of Walberton in the County of Sussex for his services . The titles went to his son Roger when he died .
