Frederik "Kunngi" Kristensen (born July 20, 1952 in Uummannaq ) is a Greenlandic painter , sculptor , musician and poet .

Life

Frederik Kristensen is the son of the catechist Karl Jørgen Jacob Peter Kristensen and his wife Vita Margrethe Lea Kirstine Larsen. He is married to the teacher Karen Geraae Bendtsen (* 1953).

As an infant he was nicknamed "Kunngi" ( Greenlandic King ) because King Frederik IX. held him in his arms when he visited Greenland in 1952. At the age of seven he injured his index finger so badly that it became clear that he could not do any physical work. When he later saw his uncle paint, he decided to become an artist. After completing secondary school in Aasiaat , he enrolled at Grafisk Værksted in Nuuk , today's art school , in 1975 . From 1977 he attended the Art Academy in Copenhagen .

Frederik Kristensen's style differs significantly from that of other Greenlandic artists. While in Greenlandic art mostly motifs from nature and traditional culture are shown, Kunngi's works are mostly abstract and are characterized by clear geometric figures and clear colors, especially blue. He works with screen prints , lithographs , zincographies and linocuts . He also creates oil and acrylic paintings or works with soapstone . He has exhibited in Greenland, New York City , Paris and Norway . In 1977 he created the Greenland Christmas stamp.

Kunngi is also active as a poet and musician. He released the CD Samma Samma Paffa Paffa in 1994 and Inequnaq in 2002 . He illustrates his poetry collections himself.

On September 14, 2011 he received the Nersornaat in silver. In the same year he was awarded the Greenlandic Culture Prize. His book Avuu was nominated for the Children's and Youth Book Prize of the West Nordic Council . In 2018 he received the honorary award of the Koda Award for his musical life's work .
