Frederik Poulsen

Frederik Poulsen (born March 7, 1876 in Hvilsager , † November 8, 1950 in Hellerup ) was a Danish classical archaeologist .

Frederik Poulsen studied after visiting the Randers Statsskole from 1894 at the University of Copenhagen , where he obtained his master's degree in 1899. Before that, he was studying in Göttingen (1896–97 with Ulrich von Wilamowitz-Moellendorff ) and Munich (1897 with Adolf Furtwängler ). From 1900 to 1901 he deepened his studies in Bonn (with Georg Loeschcke ) and from 1902 to 1903 in Berlin . After studying in Greece, he received his doctorate in 1904 in Copenhagen with Johan Ludvig Heiberg with the thesis "Dipylongravene og Dipylonvaserne". From 1905 to 1907 he was a member of the École française d'Athènes . From 1910 he was assistant in the antiques department of the Ny Carlsberg Glyptotek in Copenhagen, from 1915 he headed the department, from 1926 to 1943 he was director of the museum.

The antiquities of the Ny Carlsberg Glyptotek were the focus of his scientific work, he published the Etruscan collection and in particular the general catalog of ancient sculptures . He was also able to expand the museum's collection through numerous new acquisitions. Based on his dissertation, early Greek art was another of his research areas, and he also published important studies and catalogs on ancient portraits . He also carried out excavations in Greece ( Heroon of Kalydon (Aetolia) , 1926, 1928, 1932, 1935). He wrote several popular science books on ancient art and culture, as well as novels.
