The Freiburg Wasserschlössle is located in the Sternwald above the Wiehre district . It is a high water tank with a striking front in the style of a castle. The elevated water tank has been partially built into the mountainside and is operated by the Freiburg water supplier Bn Netze .

Building

The system was built between 1895 and 1896 and serves to supply the city with drinking water . The castle-like facade made of sandstone blocks and cast stone was intended to express the appreciation for drinking water. The model for the design was the Freiburg city seal from 1245, which can still be seen on manhole covers in the city center. The Wasserschlössle was built by the Freiburg company Brenzinger & Cie.

The eastern city was centrally supplied with water via the Wasserschlössle for more than 100 years. The population increase towards the end of the 19th century had led to the construction of a waterworks near Ebnet (1872 to 1876). From the Ebnet waterworks, which is higher up, the water flows through a natural gradient to the Wasserschlössle (314 m above sea level). There it reaches the water chamber, the actual water reservoir, via an antechamber. This has a capacity of 3800 m³, is 45 m long, 33 m deep and 6 m high. The water continues to flow to the households in the city without pumping, again through a natural gradient.

Extension of the plant

The denser development and the associated higher population with correspondingly higher water consumption led to water supply problems, especially in the Wiehre district. The water pressure was no longer sufficient, so that in 2001 a new elevated tank was built. Only with the widespread installation of water meters did the water consumption of the Freiburg population noticeably decrease. The location of the extension is 600 m from the Wasserschlössle and is 42 m higher. The new container is 42 m long, 27 m deep and 8 m high and holds 6000 m³.
