Peter Gehrisch (born January 13, 1942 in Dresden ) is a German writer , translator and editor of the magazine " Ostragehege ".

Life

Peter Gehrisch was born in Dresden, after the bombing of the city in 1945 the family lived briefly in Bielatal before settling again in Dresden. After finishing school, Peter Gehrisch began training at the teacher training institute in Nossen and studied German and ethics at the "Clara Zetkin" University of Education in Leipzig and the Technical University of Dresden . This was followed by employment as a teacher: from 1985 he worked at the adult education center in Dresden and, in the course of the fall of the Wall, gave courses that “deal critically with the recent history of GDR literature and its writers [...]. One resolves to re-evaluate the story and to make the room of the adult education center available to authors who are not wanted in the GDR. ”From 1992 Peter Gehrisch also worked as a teacher at high schools in Dresden such as the evening grammar school .

Peter Gehrisch's first publications appeared in newspapers and magazines as early as 1983, so he worked as a literary critic for the Dresden daily Union and the cultural weekly Sunday . In 1990, an article by Peter Gehrisch appeared as “Employees from the GDR” in the weekly newspaper Die Zeit . In 1993 he published the volume Dresden together with the Dresden photographer Christian Borchert (1942–2000) . Flight into the past , which contains images from documentaries from 1910-1949. Just one year later, the book Das Glücksrad was a collection of short stories that dealt with the immediate post-war period. This and the discussion about the bombing of Dresden are topics that run through Peters Gehrisch's autobiographical oeuvre and that he most recently dealt with in his novel Hans-Theodors Karneval or Das Federnorakel from 2006.

His interest in neighboring Poland also arises from his biography . Peter Gehrisch's grandfather was expelled from Bad Charlottenbrunn after the end of the  Second World War , whereupon he became intensively involved with the country and the language as a grandson. He learned Polish and maintained contacts with Polish writers. In 1993 and 1996 he was the initiator of the German-Polish Literature Days in Dresden, belongs to the Orpheus group of authors and was a participant in the German-Polish poet steamer and from then on also worked as a translator of Polish works into German, such as Cyprian poems Kamil Norwids , Urszula Koziołs or Wojciech Izaak Strugałas . His own works, such as the collection of poems Wortwunder Vers / Zraniony słowem wers from 2001, were published in German and Polish. Together with Renata Maria Niemierowska and the translator Marek Śnieciński initiated Peter Gehrisch 1999, the project Orpheus / Orfeusz to which writers from different European countries in Poland, since 2003, always in twice a year Lwówek Śląski to the European days of poetry meet , write your own texts and present them in front of an audience in Poland and Germany. Peter Gehrisch is the founder of the literary arena association, which has been publishing the Ostragehege magazine for literature and art since 1994 and has so far published six anthologies, such as Orpheus gathers the spirits in the context of encounters with Eastern European cultures. Since 2011 he has participated in international congresses and poetry festivals in Belgrade, Smederevo (Serbia) and Reșița (Romania). Peter Gehrisch lives with his Polish wife in Görlitz and Lwówek Śląski.

Honors

In 2006, Peter Gehrisch was awarded the Order of Merit of the Free State of Saxony by the Saxon Prime Minister Georg Milbradt , because he “has made outstanding contributions to literature in Saxony and the cultural exchange with Poland and the Czech Republic…” Mr. Gehrisch organized numerous author meetings that took place in the have largely led to the good neighborly relationship between Saxony and its Polish and Czech border regions. In 2018, on the occasion of the UNESCO World Poetry Day 2018, Peter Gehrisch was awarded the `` Golden Ring with Eagle '' for his mediation between Polish and German culture, his translations, the organization of the Dresden Literature Days and in recognition of his own literary work.
