Poet steamer captain Hans Häussler on deck

The German-Polish poet steamer (Polish: Statek Literacki ) drove under the skipper Hans Häußler with German and Polish writers from 1995 to 1999 10 days a year in September between Szczecin and Görlitz / or. Wroclaw .

history

Within the "Poland plan" of VS chairman Erich Loest there was in Saxony a . a. the “ wortlust ” project in Brandenburg was launched by the New Society for Literature (NGL), the RBB and the Polish Writers' Association of Poet Steamers under the leadership of Hans Häußler. As part of this major project, events with writers , translators , journalists , actors and politicians took place on the ship , but mostly in the surrounding towns - between Szczecin, Zielona Góra , Wroclaw, Frankfurt (Oder) and Görlitz. One of the high points was the poet wedding in 1998 between the Leipzig songwriter Dieter Kalka and the Grünberg fairy tale author Agnieszka Haupe on the Frankfurt Oder Bridge .

Texts and an artist's book were created within local poetic communities, which were auctioned and the proceeds of which went to the benefit of the flood victims. There were small projects on the ship such as the “Literary Bed” - with two Polish and two German poets translating each other's texts. 50-80 authors were invited per trip. Some of the poets took the cabin ship, others stayed in hotels.

High / low tide

When the voyage was canceled in 1997 due to flooding, the Polish water protection authorities made their inspection ship Warta 3 available and when the voyage became problematic in 1998 due to lack of money and water, the Wroclaw water management authority let the inland vessel Kościuszko , named after the Polish national hero Tadeusz Kościuszko, be used for the project drive and also opened the locks so that the Oder had enough fairway depth.

Further German-Polish literary encounters

The federal states of Saxony and Brandenburg , which border on Poland, have been holding meetings with Polish authors since the early 1990s. Above all, the writers ' association Independent Writers Association Dresden under Peter Gehrisch organized literary festivals in Dresden as early as 1993 with awards and publications in the Ostragehege and anthologies such as "The Green Border". The Leipzig Literature Office published in 1997 in its series of poetry "stechapfel" issue no. 35 with poems by Zbigniew Dmitroca , post- poems by Tom Pohlmann . VS Sachsen organized the festival "wortlust" in 1995 with Dieter Kalka as project manager, which took place again in 1997 in Lublin , supported by the German Society . As a private initiative by Renata Maria Niemierowska and Marek Śnieciński, the Orpheus project was first carried out in Wrocław in 2000, and later by Gert Neumann and Peter Gehrisch in Bad Muskau . Peter Gehrisch continued the literature festival in Lwówek Śląski with international guests. In 2015, the Sorbian Artists Association led by Benedikt Dyrlich held its 37th Festival of Poetry with Sorbian and Slavic-speaking authors as well as a German-speaking writer (including Peter Handke ). There are similar festivals in Poznań ("Ostry nawrót dekadencji"), in Zielona Góra ( Uniwersytet Poezji ), in Lublin ( Czas Poetów of the Bruno Schulz Foundation ).
