Pavel Kohout (born July 20, 1928 in Prague ) is a Czechoslovak - Austrian writer , theater man, civil rights activist and politician .

Life

After graduating from university, Kohout began to study philosophy at the Charles University in Prague . In 1945 he joined the Communist Party (KSČ) and was appointed to the Central Committee of the Czechoslovak Youth Association (ČSM).

After completing his studies, Kohout became a journalist and began working as an editor at the International Radio Exhibition in Prague in 1948. The following year he was appointed assistant to the Czech cultural attaché in Moscow. At the end of 1950 he returned to Prague and was editor-in-chief of the satirical magazine Dikobraz (German: The Porcupine ) until the spring of 1952 . He then served in the army until 1955 , where he a. a. as editor of the weekly magazine Československý voják (German: The Czechoslovak Soldier ).

Subsequently, Kohout got a job with state television. In 1956 he was accepted by Svaz československých spisovatelů (German: Association of Czechoslovakian Writers ), of which he remained a member until 1967. From 1952 he worked as a director and directed in 1952 the ensemble of the interim in Divadlo Julia Fučíka (German: Julius Fučík -Theater ) renamed Vrchlického divadlo in northern Bohemia Louny (German: Laun ).

As a member of the Communist Party of Czechoslovakia (KSČ) he was one of the spokesmen for the Prague Spring . After its failure, he was expelled from the KSČ in 1969. He was a co-author and a signatory of Charter 77 . In 1978 he took on a consultancy contract at the Burgtheater in Vienna . He was then expelled from his Prague apartment. He was expatriated in 1979 with his wife Jelena and has been an Austrian citizen since 1980 . Since 1989 he has been able to publish again in the Czech Republic. Pavel Kohout lives in Prague and Vienna and gives lectures and lectures all over Austria.

Pavel Kohut's first marriage was with actress Alena Vránová (* 1932) and then with the writer Anna Cornová (* 1932). The artist Ondřej Kohout (* 1953) and the author Tereza Boučková (* 1957) come from the second marriage. Since 1970 Kohout has been married to the screenwriter and writer Jelena Mašínova (* 1941).
