The free-game European championship in 1993 was the 24th tournament in this discipline of carom billiards and took place from 19 to 23 May 1993 in Bottrop . It was the sixth free game European championship in Germany.

history

The third European championship in the free game, which was held in Bottrop within four years, ended again with a surprise victory. The French Marc Massé, who played his way into the main tournament through the qualifying round, became European champion for the first time. For the eighth time a German came second in this tournament. This time it was Volker Baten who had already achieved good results in recent years. Two co-favorites played for third place. Here the Belgian Frédéric Caudron won against the former European champion Fonsy Grethen from Luxenburg. The multiple junior European champion Martin Horn from Essen showed his talent in the seniors for the first time with seventh place in the free game. The increase in the set distance to 150 points was generally welcomed.

mode

A pre-qualification was played in 10 groups of three and two players and a main qualification with eight groups of players. The set distance was 100 points with two winning sets. Eight players were determined to meet the eight seeded players. Then there was a double knockout system with a winning and a consolation round, whereby the players for the final and the game for third place were determined. It was played on two sets of 150 points each. It was played without a break, except for one game in a recording. If a set was won, there were two set points for a win and one set point for a draw. In the event of a tie, a decisive set (ES) was played. If the first player finishes the sentence in a recording, there was no follow-up.
